Your Mello Bed
Not every soft bed is a supportive one. Over time, ordinary stuffing and fibre-fill compress, and your dog sinks straight through to the hard floor beneath. An orthopaedic bed is built different: it contours to your dog's body, keeps them lifted so they don't sink through, and holds that structure for years, not months.
The Mello Bed does this with two layers. Gel-infused memory foam on top contours to their body, easing pressure points and aligning the spine. A high-density base underneath lifts them off the floor and holds its shape over time, spreading their weight evenly across the bed.
Good for dogs managing arthritis, hip dysplasia, or recovering from surgery, but not only them. Younger, active dogs benefit too, since even support now means less wear and tear on their joints later.
The Mello Bed is built on a dual-layer foam system, with each layer doing a different job.
Top Layer: A solid slab of gel-infused memory foam that contours slowly around your dog, easing pressure off their joints. Standard memory foam traps body heat. The gel pulls that warmth away instead, so the foam stays cool to the touch and your dog gets the same slow, supportive sink without overheating through the night. It's also a continuous slab, not the ridged "egg crate" foam found in a lot of memory foam pet beds, so their weight is held evenly rather than resting on a few raised points.
Bottom Layer: A high-density foam base lifts them off the floor and holds its structure over time. No flattening, no sagging.
Bolsters: Filled with the same high-density foam, offering a soft, supportive place for your dog to rest their head.
All foam is CertiPUR-US® certified, independently tested for durability, performance, and low emissions.
How your dog sleeps shapes how they live. Calmer days, steadier moods, a body that keeps up with them for longer.
Memory foam works with your dog's body to make that possible.
- Pressure point relief: The foam pushes up against the body's heaviest pressure points (like hips and elbows) distributing weight evenly so those areas aren't left to strain through hours of rest.
- Motion absorption: The dual-layer structure absorbs surface movement, so a dog that shifts and resettles through the night is less likely to break their own sleep cycle.
- Body contouring: Body heat softens the memory foam over time, allowing it to mould to your dog's exact position and hold them there comfortably.
- Denser structure. Memory foam's dense structure gives dust mites less room to settle than looser fill materials like fibre or feather.
- Cooling and airflow: The gel-infused top layer draws heat away from the body, helping your dog stay comfortable through longer periods of rest.
Memory foam is a material. It softens and contours to your dog's shape.
Orthopaedic is about density and structure - what stops your dog sinking through to the floor, and keeps their weight evenly supported.
So a bed can be memory foam without being orthopaedic. Thin, low-density foam feels soft on day one, but compresses fast and stops protecting joints within weeks.
The Mello Bed is built to be both. Gel-infused memory foam on top for the contouring feel, a high-density base underneath for the structure that lasts.
Safety was central to every material decision. The foam is CertiPUR-US® certified, meaning it has been independently tested and is free from harmful chemicals including formaldehyde, heavy metals, and ozone depleters.
The bouclé cover is made from OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified fabric, meaning every component has been tested for harmful substances and is safe for contact with skin. Safe for them. Considered for your home.
Two separate waterproof linings sit inside the bed, one around the mattress and one around the four bolsters, shielding the foam from spills and accidents from the inside out.
The outer bouclé cover isn't waterproof, as it's designed for comfort and ease of washing, but it removes easily and is fully machine-washable.
No bed is entirely indestructible and we won't pretend otherwise. The Mello Bed is durable, but no match for overly aggressive use, like excessive chewing, biting, or scratching.
Yes. The dual-layer foam system is designed to relieve pressure on joints, reduce stiffness, and support deeper, more restorative rest. For older dogs or those with joint discomfort, the right foundation matters - and the Mello Bed is built with that in mind.
Not at all. Joint health starts early, and good support at every age helps protect it. The Mello Bed is built for dogs at any stage of life - from active younger dogs recovering after a long day, to seniors who need a little more care. Think of it as a long-term investment in how well they age.
Yes. The non-slip base keeps the bed firmly in place when your dog steps in and out - important for stability, and especially so for dogs with joint pain or reduced mobility.
Not yet, but additional covers are coming soon.
Shipping
We currently deliver across South Africa. If you're outside our standard delivery zones, get in touch and we'll do our best to help.
Shipping is free across South Africa on all orders over R1,000.
Orders are processed and dispatched from our Cape Town warehouse within 1–2 business days. Most shipments arrive within 3–5 business days, and you will receive a tracking notification as soon as your package is on its way.
If you need to update your address, contact us as soon as possible at hello@mellobed.co.za. Once an order has been dispatched, we may not be able to redirect it.
Yes, if it hasn't shipped yet. Email us at hello@mellobed.co.za and we'll sort it out.
If your order's already in transit, we can't change it. Keep the box unopened and contact us instead - we'll organise an exchange or return.
Your Mello Bed will arrive rolled up, and vacuum-sealed to keep it compact for delivery.
How to unbox:
Step 1: The Size Check (Before cutting the vacuum seal)
Before you cut any plastic, unroll the sealed bed on the floor and have your pup stand next to it to check it's the size you expected. Once the bed expands, it won't fit back in the box, so if you need to exchange it, keeping it compressed makes that easy.
Step 2: Unwrap with care
Carefully cut along the edge of the plastic (watch out for the fabric underneath). Slide the bed out, and you'll hear it hiss and breathe as air wakes up the premium memory foam.
Step 3: Straight to snoozing
Give the bed about 24-48 hours to fully plump up and reach its full, cloud-like glory, and any wrinkles caused by the tight compression should iron themselves out.
Returns & exchanges
You can return your Mello Bed for a full refund within 7 days of delivery, or exchange it within 14 days. To qualify for a return or exchange, the bed must still be vacuum-sealed and in its original packaging. Please note that the return shipping costs are the responsibility of the customer.
Every Mello Bed arrives vacuum-sealed, so you know yours has never been opened. It's also why we can't accept opened beds back, as the seal can't be redone. But if yours has been broken, please reach out anyway and we'll do our best to help.
Unsure about the size? Check our size guide before opening, or email us at hello@mellobed.co.za before breaking the vacuum seal. We're happy to help you get it right.
And if anything else about your order isn't right, get in touch. We'll always help you find the best next step.
Because our beds are compressed and vacuum-sealed for safe, hygienic delivery, we can only accept returns where the seal is unbroken.
Once opened, the bed is considered used and can't be returned, for hygiene and material-expansion reasons. If you're at all unsure before opening yours, check our size guide or reach out to hello@mellobed.co.za first.
Email hello@mellobed.co.za and we'll take it from there. Once your request is approved, we'll send full instructions on how and where to send your bed. Please wait for approval first - items sent back without it can't be accepted.
Life with Your Mello Bed
The bouclé cover is fully machine washable. Unzip it, wash on a gentle cycle at 30°C with a mild detergent, and hang to dry inside out in the shade. Reassemble only once the cover is completely dry.
Do not bleach, iron, or dry clean. Wash with similar colours.
The foam and inner lining should never be washed - wipe the lining down with a damp cloth if needed.
Check the care label inside the cover for a quick reference.
The orthopaedic memory foam base and bolsters should always remain inside their protective waterproof liner. Never submerge or machine wash the foam, as this can cause damage.
No. Please only hang to dry inside out and in the shade. Most covers dry within a few hours.
The Mello Bed includes waterproof liners to protect the foam from spills and accidents. For quick cleanups, simply wipe the liner down with a damp cloth and mild soap.
If a deeper clean is needed, remove the liner and machine wash it on a gentle cycle (30°C) (you can throw it in with the cover). Always air dry before reassembling, and never wash or submerge the foam itself in water.
Once everything is completely dry:
- Lay the cover out with the non-slip base facing up.
- Flip the non-slip base back over the inside of the cover, so you're looking at the interior.
- Take the bolster piece, curved side facing the floor, and slot it around the bed edge underneath the fabric flap. Zip it closed all the way around.
- Place the foam base on top of the zipped up bolsters, with the blue gel layer facing the floor.
- Untuck the non-slip base and zip closed.
- Flip the bed the right way around.
A new bed can feel like a big change. Some dogs sink right in, others need a little more time to warm up.
If yours needs a little help, here are some tips that should do the trick:
- Make it smell like home. Wash the cover so it smells like home, not like a box. Or toss an old blanket on top for a few days. Familiar smell, faster love.
- Keep the location the same. New bed, same favourite corner. One change at a time.
- Retire the old bed. A second option nearby just gives them somewhere else to nap. Move a scent-familiar blanket onto the new bed instead, so the comfort travels with it.
- Reward the moment. A treat, a happy word, every time they hop on. Good vibes in, good habits out.
- Give it time. Some pups settle in a day, while others may need a couple. Both totally normal.
- Let them choose. No lifting, no coaxing. Just leave the invitation open.
